Lanzado en 2015
En el marco de una asociación entre la Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation y The North Bay Cancer Alliance, Cancer Support Sonoma se financió originalmente como un estudio de investigación para evaluar los efectos de las terapias complementarias en pacientes con cáncer. En ese momento estábamos operando fuera del hospital. Cuando el estudio llegó a su fin en octubre de 2017, tuvimos que tomar una decisión: cerrar nuestras puertas o encontrar nuevas fuentes de financiamiento y un nuevo hogar para poder continuar sirviendo a nuestra creciente clientela. Los comentarios de los pacientes y un vistazo a los resultados del estudio nos dijeron que nuestro trabajo ha marcado una diferencia significativa en las vidas de aquellos a quienes servimos. La solicitud de los pacientes y proveedores fue sincera y unánime: "Por favor, sigan funcionando Cancer Support Sonoma".

Susan Murray
Susan recibió una maestría de la Universidad de Stanford y trabajó durante 15 años como directora en Bing Nursery School, un laboratorio/instalación de investigación en el campus. Después de varios años como ama de casa, se convirtió en educadora de salud para Planned Parenthood en South Bay. Allí estuvo involucrada en el Programa Prenatal antes de convertirse en Coordinadora de Salud Mamaria. Cuando se jubiló, fue voluntaria en Bay Area Cancer Connections en Palo Alto, una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece programas y servicios a personas afectadas por cáncer de mama y de ovario. En 2015, Susan y su esposo, Scott, se mudaron a Sonoma: un sueño hecho realidad para ellos. Convertirse en voluntario de CSS fue una opción natural.

Teri Adolfo
Además de brindar masajes oncológicos a los clientes de CSS, Teri asumió el rol de Directora Ejecutiva para ayudar a CSS a crecer y expandir sus servicios. Teri ha trabajado en el campo de la atención médica durante más de 30 años. Tiene una maestría de UC Davis en Desarrollo Organizacional y Comunitario. Esto lo llevó a una carrera en planificación de la salud, derechos de los pacientes y luego como Directora de Salud para Todos, una clínica comunitaria multilingüe que trata principalmente a personas que no hablan inglés. Después de la muerte de sus padres y su hermana por cáncer, Teri estudió acupuntura y obtuvo su maestría en Medicina Tradicional China y Ayurveda. Se desempeñó como Directora de Kerala, una Clínica de Medicina Integrativa en Seattle, especializada en enfermedades autoinmunes y cáncer. Cuando se presentó la oportunidad de trabajar con Cancer Support Sonoma, ella estuvo de acuerdo. “Quiero brindar tantos servicios de apoyo contra el cáncer a los clientes y sus cuidadores como sea posible para que puedan vivir su mejor vida después del diagnóstico de cáncer”.

Sharon O'Neil
Sharon se unió a Cancer Support Sonoma después de 15 años de trabajar en el sector sin fines de lucro en el condado de Santa Cruz. Su pasión por apoyar a organizaciones sin fines de lucro comenzó cuando fue coordinadora de programas de Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition, seguido de un puesto administrativo en Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Support. Al haber trabajado con organizaciones que atienden a niños con cáncer y sus familias, sabe lo importantes que pueden ser los servicios de apoyo en las vidas de los pacientes con cáncer. “Cuando mi madre estaba en tratamiento por cáncer de mama en la década de 1960, la medicina integrativa en oncología no existía. El hecho de que ella se hubiera beneficiado de las terapias complementarias actuales me inspira a ayudar a quienes en nuestra comunidad enfrentan cáncer a sentirse atendidos.

Scott has 15+ years experience in the financial services industry, focusing on helping families achieve debt freedom and financial independence. He also has experience in public relations and advertising. He is active in a number of other Sonoma organizations, like Rotary and the United Methodist Church.

Karen, a 17-year cancer survivor, had a long career in corporate government relations and government service. After retiring and relocating to Sonoma, she became involved in community affairs. She has served on many boards, including the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, Sonoma Community Center, Jack London Park Partners (Vice Chair), and more. Her efforts have resulted in the following recognitions: Alcalde (Honorary Mayor), 2019; Pulse Award from the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, 2008; Sonoma Conservationist of the Year, 2014; Senator Dodd Woman of the Year, 2017. One of her proudest achievements was co-founding the Sonoma Overlook Trail. After serving as Deputy Director of California State Parks, Karen founded and operated her own international walking, hiking, and trekking company. “When I had cancer, none of the services CSS offers were available here in the Valley. I was so pleased to learn about CSS, its plans and offerings. As a board member, I’m looking forward to helping fund, promote, expand and develop its many services.”
Carlos Goodwin

Charles is a retired marketing and business development executive with over 30 years of experience working in the high-tech industry, which included marketing Healthcare Information Technology for Intel Corporation. “Working with the healthcare industry was one of the most meaningful times of my career,” says Charles. “Helping doctors and nurses utilize information technology to help improve patient care and safety was very rewarding.” While living in the South Bay, Charles served on the Leadership Board for the Northern California chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. He also volunteered with the Second Harvest Food Bank. In 2019, Charles and his wife relocated from the bustling Bay Area to the serene landscapes of Sonoma. He looked for opportunities to engage and support the local community and found many. Charles is an active member of the Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley, and he provided marketing support for Cancer Support Sonoma’s 2023 WigOut! event. “I strongly believe in Cancer Support Sonoma’s mission to provide comprehensive support services to those impacted by cancer. I look forward to helping the organization continue to grow in the coming years.”
Kelly Mather

Kelly has written and published many books on wellness and has offered tools to inspire healing on all four levels (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) using The 5 Keys to Wellness since 2002. Kelly holds a both Bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a Master’s degree from Medical College of Virginia in Health Administration and has been a hospital and healthcare CEO since 1996. She created the Healing Hospital Model and inspired the implementation of the 11 healing modules to promote a more holistic approach in many California hospitals. She has been and continues to serve as a board of director with many healthcare and wellness organizations, like Cancer Support Sonoma. Her latest project is leading The Health & Happiness HUB in Sonoma Valley to create a healthier community. Kelly is the proud mother of three children and when not passionately following her mission, she is a spa addict and loves being one with nature.
Lori Rukes

Lori Rukes brings her relationship-building expertise, fundraising experience, and heartfelt commitment to supporting those affected by cancer to her role on the Board of Cancer Support Sonoma. With over 20 years as a professional hairdresser, Lori has cultivated a deep passion for building meaningful relationships and helping others thrive. The global perspective she developed while living abroad gave her unique insights into the importance of community connection and support. During her time in India, Lori demonstrated her commitment to service by fundraising for a nonprofit initiative and creating lasting bonds within local communities. This experience, combined with her personal connection to cancer, has inspired her dedication to Cancer Support Sonoma, where her creativity, talent, and extraordinary commitment make her a deeply valued board member.
Douglas Thornley

Douglas Thornley is Principal at Goring & Straja Architects and leads the Sonoma Studio. Previously, Douglas founded Baum | Thornley Architects in 1994 and merged with the national firm of Gould Evans in 2008. He served as Managing Principal of the San Francisco Studio for Gould Evans until 2020. Douglas is an award winning architect having received recognition for his winery, residential and institutional projects. Colleagues and clients are inspired and motivated by his dedication to great design. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Sonoma State University Wine Business Institute Board of Directors from 2010 - 2022 and is currently on this second rotation on the Board of Directors for Good Samaritan in San Francisco having served on the Board originally over 25 years ago.
Marcia Carruthers

Marcia is a retired disability management and non-profit trade association executive. Her expertise includes: risk, behavioral and disability management, corporate benefits, and association management. In 1992 she co-founded the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC), a north American trade association for benefits and risk professionals, having served as CEO and Board Chair for over 15 years. “My career has been dedicated to the advancement of education and training for disability professionals with the goal of return to work. The key driver of my passion has been in helping both individuals and companies cope with the challenges and disruption of absence from work and life.” She and her husband moved from Sea Ranch in 2016 to seek a like community where residents can actively participate and make a difference in where they live. Active in several Sonomaorganizations, most recently she was on the board of Impact100 serving in Grants Oversight for 3 years. “Sonoma is a special town where active involvement is a part of the lifestyle and clearly is the driving force behind the quality of life here. It is very inspiring to see how so many non-profits are supported both financially and through volunteering opportunities unlike no other I have experienced. It’s no wonder that we all think this is the best place to live because we have such an important stake in it.” A volunteer and participant in WigOut, she has also availed herself of several CSS services and hopes to contribute to the enhancement of the organization through her own experiences on a cancer journey. “CSS is such an important resource for the community and a shining example of the passion and insight that a small group of dedicated individuals can make in the community and in someone’s life. I am excited to be able to add to the growth of CSS going forward.”
Pietra Buelow

Pietra Buelow is a Certified Public Accountant and senior finance executive with more than 30 years of experience leading finance, accounting, governance, and organizational transformation for both public companies and Silicon Valley organizations. Throughout her career, she has held executive leadership roles with companies including Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Frank Rimerman & Co., and KPMG, where she specialized in financial strategy, internal controls, risk management, and operational excellence. She brings extensive experience working with executive leadership teams and boards to strengthen financial oversight, improve organizational effectiveness, and support long-term growth. As Treasurer and Financial Lead for Cancer Support Sonoma, Pietra is committed to ensuring the organization's financial resources are managed with integrity, transparency, and thoughtful stewardship. She is passionate about using her professional expertise to help this nonprofit organization build a strong financial foundation that allows it to focus on their mission of serving the community. Pietra is proud to support Cancer Support Sonoma's work in providing compassionate programs and services for individuals and families navigating the challenges of cancer.
